Second Leitrim Chair
October 02, 2026
In an update to my last post about building the Leitrim Chair, I intended to build a second one all along. This is the completed work. My first one was disappointingly uncomfortable. I sat in it a bit and determined the backrest wasn't curved enough and it was too upright.

For my second chair, I angled the seat further back and also set the backrest to a deeper angle. I also made the backrest shorter from top to bottom, and curved it a little bit more. I was less particular about cleaning up the back sticks where the tenons were cut, so the transition to the joint is not as smooth.

This chair is considerably more comfortable. You can see from the profile view that it has quite a lean, however I should have accounted for the chair's lean and angled the back legs further out. It hasn't tipped over on me but it definitely feels like it will if I lean on just the back legs. You can see the difference in the chair comparisons below.

It is unfinished currently because I'd like to paint it with either input or assistance from my child. I'm debating if I want to paint a base color to the seat and then paint freely on it, let my child choose the colors of the back sticks and backrest, or some other combination. I don't mind the free-form painting but I'd still like there to be a base color underneath whatever my child chooses.
I will update with the colors when it comes to that.
